Week 15 Prompt Response

Here are some of (what I think are) the great ways we market our fiction collection at my library:

  1. Weekly featured new books posts on social media
Each week, we highlight a selection of six new books on our Facebook and Instagram pages. These books vary in genre, but it allows our following to get an idea of the new books available. It also shows that we have the new hot read, you don't need to go out and buy it! In relation to this, we have a dedicated new books section right by the entrance (whereas the rest of our adult collection is upstairs), so patrons have easy access to the new books, including those we featured on social media.

      2. Book chat programs

At least once a quarter, we host a book chat program centered around a theme, such as beach reads or books to give as Christmas gifts. Accompanied by snacks and activities, these book chats include our librarians speed-running through the synopses of 10-20 books in our collection that relate to the book chat theme, and provide opportunities to further chat about these books and other books patrons bring up.

      3. Readers forum

This is a newer development, but as part of our strategic goals to create communities centered around reading, we recently launched a readers forum on our website. This is a place to share book recommendations, talk about books, for library book clubs to chat outside of the meeting time, and just a space for readers to connect. This space also allows the librarians to create discussion threads around certain topics and share book recommendations from our collection.

Comments

  1. I love the idea of a reader forum! One of my favorite things about reading is the opportunity to talk about those books with other people. A reader forum would give readers a space to discuss books and share recommendations. This is a really great idea!

  2. We also do weekly posts for the incoming material, I call them my "New Book Tuesdays," and it has been growing in popularity! I LOVE your other two marketing ideas! We've been playing with an idea similar to your Book Chat program, and I think that a Readers forum is a really good way to try and reach demographics that wouldn't necessarily want to or have time to come to an in-person book club meeting. I've been floating the idea of a virtual teen program to some of our regular teenage patrons--but they've told me they think it sounds too much like homework! How have you been advertising it, or what are your plans to spread the word about the forums?
